Created by Jarin Foster, quietus is a profoundly beautiful short film about a young woman who feels abandoned by God when darkness enters her life. It is full of color, stunning cinematography, and–most importantly for me–very little dialogue.
In a movie which is mostly silent, the music composer is presented with both a great opportunity and a great challenge. Without having to worry about competing with important lines, there are a lot of opportunities to make the underscore really shine and help “sell” the emotions of the story. At the same time, it is important not to take too much liberty with that soundspace we are given and create music that is distracting.
In the spirit of Jarin’s desire for a very organic sound, the score for quietus was built around a 4-piece string quartet and gently supported with traditional string sections, piano, and a few woodwind instruments.
